Salvatore Rosa was a complex man. He was proud of his intellectual activities: philosophy, poetry, painting, play-writing and acting. He formed societies of fellow artists in the cities of Naples, Florence and Rome to explore new philosophical ideas/5(2). Salvator Rosa was one of the boldest and most powerfully inventive artists and personalities of the Italian 17th century.

In Britain he is now best known for his wild landscapes, those scenes of which Horace Salvator Rosa book so memorably wrote: “Precipices, mountains, torrents, wolves, rumblings – Salvator Rosa”/5(2). Salvator Rosa was not only an artist, but also a musician, a comic actor and a poet.

This study examines Rosa's art, his life and his opinions set against the background of the creative activity of 17th-century Italy/5. Salvator Rosa was one of the boldest and most powerfully inventive artists and personalities of the Italian 17th century.

In Britain he is now best known for his wild landscapes, those scenes of which Horace Walpole so memorably wrote: "Precipices, mountains, torrents, wolves, rumblings -- Salvator Rosa."
